Follower-Characteristics as Antecedents of LMX Relationships on Organizational Performance in PWDs Institutions in Mombasa and Kilifi Counties

ABSTRACT

Today, there has been great effort to ensure enhanced mainstreaming of persons living with disability. Such efforts have surfaced despite a myriad of challenges. This study was guided by two objectives: effect of follower characteristics as antecedents of LMX on organization performance in PWDs institutions in Mombasa and Kilifi Counties and moderating effect of organization culture on follower-characteristics of LMX relationships and organization performance in PWDs institutions in Mombasa and Kilifi Counties. Leader-Member exchange theory and social exchange theory formed the theoretical foundation of this study. A conceptual framework showing the correlation of the study’s variables is given. Review of related literature is and a well-articulated methodology given to show the procedure that was carried for the study. The study applied descriptive research design and the target population of the study were managers and subordinates at all levels within the organization. The study conducted a pilot study in a PWDs institution in Mombasa County. Stratified sampling of the various departments in the Institution was applied. Convenience sampling and random sampling techniques was also used to generate the sample size. The study used a sample size of twenty-five (25) respondents two (2) to three (3) employees from every department. Semi-structured questionnaires will be used for the study. A pilot study was conducted and applied Cronbach alpha reliability estimate. The study also used quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze data. The study results provided a good governance framework of engaging their business networks within their localities. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) for windows version 21 were used to analyze data as tables and f igures were used for data presentation. One of the significant findings of this study was that majority of followers had certain expectations of their leaders. Hence, the study concluded that focusing of follower characteristics aids in availing new ideas on handling their work as well as interacting with their supervisors. A key conclusion of this study is the need for effective LMX relationships which enable individuals to reciprocate similar behavior with juniors, colleagues as well as seniors. The study recommends that followers are encouraged to consider enhancing interpersonal relationships with their superiors as this has weighty consequences at the individual and organizational levels.
