ABSTRACT

With the new curriculum in the Kenyan education system there is need to take the challenge to spread service-learning as a critical, innovative, and transformative pedagogy in our institutions. Service-learning has become a popular teaching method everywhere from elementary schools to colleges and universities. Despite the increased presence of service-learning in the education world, it is still unclear what student outcomes are associated with service-learning programs and what factors are related to more effective programs. A statistical analysis of students participating in service-learning programs compared to controls carried out in Technical university of Mombasa revealed χ2 = 0.0739, 0.062353, p-value = 0.8028 for the gender participation in service learning. The significant gains of Service-Learning in identified five outcome areas: attitudes toward self, attitudes toward University or college and learning, civic engagement, and academic performance were demonstrated. The study recommends that the mean effects should be used for empirical support or dismissal of practices associated with service –learning such as linkage to curriculum, voice, community involvement, and reflection as associated with the outcomes. The study gratifies educators who incorporate service-learning into their courses, encourages more of service-learning researches to understand how students benefit and what conditions foster their growth and development in the society.
