Enhancing Gender Mainstreaming in Competency-Based Education and Training for Transformative Learning: A Case Study at Taita Taveta National Polytechnic

Abstract:

This study investigates the integration of gender mainstreaming initiatives within the context of Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, with a specific focus on Taita Taveta National Polytechnic. The research explores how gender considerations are incorporated into CBET methodologies and their impact on transformative learning experiences.

Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the research employs a literature review on gender mainstreaming, CBET, and transformative education, complemented by qualitative data collection methods such as interviews and focus group discussions with students, faculty, and administrators. Additionally, quantitative surveys and document analysis are conducted to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current state of gender integration within CBET at the institution.

The primary objectives of the study are to identify existing gaps, challenges, and successful practices in integrating gender considerations into CBET programs at Taita Taveta National Polytechnic and to assess the transformative impact of these initiatives on students. The research aims to provide insights into the role of gender-sensitive CBET in influencing career choices, skill development, and overall empowerment, particularly within the unique context of the polytechnic. The anticipated outcomes of this study include practical recommendations for educators, policymakers, and institutions to strengthen gender mainstreaming within CBET frameworks, fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment. By contributing to the broader discourse on gender-responsive education, the research aims to support the development of a skilled, diverse, and empowered workforce capable of making meaningful contributions to society.
